What exactly does it mean to have “peace of mind”?
When I hear this phrase, Boston’s popular song, Peace of Mind, immediately
pops in my head. The lyrics talk about the busyness all around and encourages
the listener to take a look ahead, with emphasis on a sole desire to
have peace of mind.. Relentless woe results in lack of sleep, change of mood
and actions, as well as overall well-being. Tendhar and Thupten’s study shows a
strong correlation between positive mental health and survival among both ill
and healthy subjects. There is a positive correlation among having a positive
attitude, perseverance, internal focus, and inner harmony (Tendhar, 2014).
Peace of mind can be defined by feelings of safety or
protection without worry. It means freedom, harmony, and feeling calm (“Peace of Mind
Meaning in the Cambridge English Dictionary,” n.d.). When the heart and soul is aggrieved, how and where can you mend
the heartache? The restoration comes from within. Psychological health must be
holistic. Physical activity, nutrition, and a positive environment are all
essential for a healthy mind. We tend to focus on the appearance of the outward
body, rather than the inner soul and spirit.
Florence is a
bustling city full of tourists and hardworking Italians. Sometimes we focus too
much on the task(s) ahead of us. I weave my way through the streets packed with
people, soak up the “new-to-me” research skills in Dr. DeMaria’s class, and
rush back to the apartment or a café to put them into practice. At times, I go
exploring or sight-seeing and am able to stop to breathe and take in the view. I
acknowledge the brilliance and artistry someone has created, such a sight like
the Duomo! Thousands of people continually come to gaze upon and snap a quick picture
at the Duomo and other iconic places in Florence. The active community can make
it difficult to stop and appreciate what is happening in the “here and now.” Serene
areas like the park (pictured above), are excellent places to go to refresh
your mind. Although mental health is not as easily seen, it is significant to
the rest of your existence. Slow down for a minute and take a look ahead.
